Studen\u00fd rann\u00ed vzduch mi p\u00e1lil pl\u00edce, ale j\u00e1 nezpomalila. V hlav\u011b mi zn\u011bla jedin\u00e1 ot\u00e1zka: odkud m\u011bl v\u011bc m\u00e9 dcery?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baxter ut\u00edkal sm\u011brem ke star\u00e9mu parku na okraji \u010dtvrti. K m\u00edstu, kam Lily chodila kreslit. Byl tam mal\u00fd d\u0159ev\u011bn\u00fd most, opr\u00fdskan\u00e9 lavi\u010dky a velk\u00fd javor. Pr\u00e1v\u011b pod n\u00edm mi jednou \u0159ekla:
\u201eMami, i kdybych tu jednou nebyla, najde\u0161 m\u011b.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehdy jsem ji pohladila po vlasech a po\u017e\u00e1dala ji, a\u0165 nemluv\u00ed tak smutn\u011b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Te\u010f mi ta slova trhala srdce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pes se n\u00e1hle zastavil. Polo\u017eil svetr na zem a za\u010dal hrabat tlapkami v mokr\u00e9 hl\u00edn\u011b. P\u0159istoupila jsem bl\u00ed\u017e \u2014 a uvid\u011bla jsem okraj batohu. Mal\u00e9ho, modr\u00e9ho, se \u017elutou hv\u011bzdou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lilyin batoh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Klesla jsem na kolena. Ruce se mi t\u0159\u00e1sly tak siln\u011b, \u017ee jsem sotva rozepnula zip. Uvnit\u0159 byl jej\u00ed skic\u00e1k. Nad obr\u00e1zkem byl d\u011btsk\u00fdm p\u00edsmem napsan\u00fd vzkaz:

Pozd\u011bji policie vysv\u011btlila, \u017ee po nehod\u011b n\u011bkdo sebral v\u011bci z krajnice. N\u011bkdo, kdo nic nenahl\u00e1sil. N\u011bkdo, kdo prost\u011b ode\u0161el. Ale Baxter c\u00edtil Lilyin pach. Hledal ji. Ka\u017ed\u00fd den. I pot\u00e9, co jsme ji pochovali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten ve\u010der jsem poprv\u00e9 po dlouh\u00e9 dob\u011b vstoupila do jej\u00edho pokoje. Vzala jsem z police druh\u00fd svetr \u2014 stejn\u00fd, jak\u00fd m\u011bla na sob\u011b. P\u0159itiskla jsem ho k hrudi a pochopila jsem: bolest nezmiz\u00ed. Ale m\u016f\u017ee se zm\u011bnit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O m\u011bs\u00edc pozd\u011bji jsem se do parku vr\u00e1tila. Na javor jsem p\u0159ipevnila malou d\u0159ev\u011bnou cedulku s n\u00e1pisem:
